Modes

Search vs Research: pick depth on purpose

Both modes ground answers in the web. The difference is how much retrieval effort you spend—and what you pay for. Use this page to choose without guessing.

A simple rule

If you already know the question shape and just need a grounded answer, start with Search.

If you expect disagreement between sources, or you would normally open ten tabs yourself, switch to Research before you ask.

FAQ

Can I switch modes mid-thread?+

Yes. The next message uses the mode selected in the composer. Earlier turns keep whatever mode produced them.

Does Academic only work in Research?+

No. Academic is a source focus available in both modes; it biases toward scholarly domains.

Start asking

Open Perplexity, pick Search or Research and a source focus, then ask.
